  • Launch of Second Level .bn Domain Names (SLD)

    a) What is the launch of second level .bn domain names about?

    What this means is that people will now be able to register for a .bn domain name, e.g. hello.bn.
    Before this launch, only third level domain names were available, e.g. hello.com.bn.

    b) When does the launch begin?

    The launch is divided into two (2) periods:
    i) The soft launch; and
    ii) The general launch.

    c) Who can apply for a second level .bn domain name?

    During the soft launch period, only existing registrants with third (3rd) level .BN domain names registered before 1 May 2018 are eligible to apply for SLD. The SLD applied for during this period must be identical to the existing 3rd level domain name. Applications will be processed in batches and not on a first-come-first serve basis. During the general launch, applications are open to all on a first-come-first-serve basis.

    d) How can I apply for a second level .bn domain name?

    During the Soft Launch During the General Launch
    1. Existing registrants can apply through your existing registrar.*
    2. There may be an application fee that your registrar will charge.
    3. This will not be registered automatically.
    4. The domain will only be registered after the end of the batch processing period.
    1. Anyone can apply through any of BNNIC’s registrars.*
    2. There may be an application fee that your registrar will charge.
    3. Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-serve basis.
    4. Domains will be registered immediately upon approval of application.

    * All applications must be accompanied by:

    • A declaration form (refer to Annex 2 of Application for Guidelines for SLD);
    • The SLD Application Form (obtained from the accredited registrar);
    • Any associated fees (refer to Annex 1 Application for Guidelines for SLD); and
    • And any other supporting documents as BNNIC or its accredited registrars may
      require.

    e) Who are BNNIC’s current registrars?

    f) How much is the fee for each of the application?

    All applications submitted may be subject to the registration fees charged by the applicant’s selected registrar. Please contact any of our accredited registrars for the fees they charge.

    g) What happens if more than one applicant applies for the same SLD during the Soft Launch Period?

    Applicants are divided into two (2) groups during the soft launch period:

    • PRIORITY 1: Existing Registrants who are Government organisations and registered
      trademark holders who own a 3rd level domain name before 1 May 2018.
      Eg. A Government organisation with 3rd level domain name ‘123.gov.bn’, seeking to register the SLD ‘123.bn’, or a registered trademark holder with 3rd level domain name,
      ‘ABC.com.bn’, seeking to register the SLD ‘ABC.bn’.
    • PRIORITY 2: All other Existing Registrants who own a 3rd level domain name registered under the ‘com.bn/org.bn/net.bn/edu.bn’ categories before 1 May 2018. The SLD applied for must be identical to the existing 3rd level domain name.
      Eg. An Existing Registrant (who is not a Government organisation or a registered trademark holder) with 3rd level domain name ‘XYZ.com.bn’ seeking to register the SLD ‘XYZ.bn’.

    Applications in the Priority 1 Group will have priority over applicants in the Priority 2 Group. Where there are two (2) or more applicants for the same SLD within the same Group, these applicants will be invited to bid for the SLD.

    h) How does the bidding process work? How does the bidding process work?

    BNNIC will notify the relevant applicants via the email address used on the application form and provide the applicants with a Bid Form to fill in and submit. BNNIC will then announce the bid results. The SLD will be allocated to the highest bidder upon payment of the winning bid.
